The "sommer" Smoothie

"I call this The "Sommer" Smoothie for two reasons. The first is because that is how my name is spelled, even though it's pronounced like the season and the second is because it is my own creation. It is definitely Summertime, too! :) I made up this smoothie myself using ingredients I had on hand and a couple that were leftovers from dinner that night, but weren't enough to save and I didn't want to waste yummy fruit. This smoothie is not only dairy-free, but has fruit and chocolate in it. I completely eye-balled the ingredients, but I have approximated them to the best of my ability here. I had this for dessert, but it makes a great snack, brunch, or breakfast drink. This ended up making about 20oz or so, and I had enough for a yummy dessert that night and froze the leftovers. I thawed the smoothie for a few hours in the fridge the next morning and then on the counter for another hour or so and had a tasty mid-morning snack. The ingredients can be varied in amounts and type to suit your needs and tastes. My bf liked it, but he's not a soy milk fan. I don't have much of a choice, lol, as I have to be careful about dairy. I just love this drink. I've actually made many combinations just from learning what flavors work together and experimenting."

  • Place all ingredients into a blender.
  • Blend until ingredients are a smoothie consistency. Pour into a large glass and sip through a straw or enjoy without a straw, whichever you prefer.
  • Note: I also added to this smoothie one scoop of Citrucel Clear Mix fiber supplement. This is totally optional of course. If you want, you might even try adding in your favorite powdered nutritional supplement instead, like protein powder, for example, but I don't know how anything else would affect the taste of the smoothie. I know the Citrucel Clear Mix doesn't affect the taste at all and blends in well.
  • (I'm also going to try mango today.).

  1. Yum. I found this recipe looking for ways to use up the soymilk in my fridge before it goes bad. Then, the fact that it started with the correct letter for "Healthy ABC" was awesome so I tagged it. And I'm so glad I did! I had a half a frozen banana in the freezer so I halved the recipe and used it. I also used all mixed berries, and added a shake of fiber. The chocolate taste is subtle here, but adds a nice level of flavor. I couldn't taste the pineapple exactly, but think it too added something nice. I suspect I'll be enjoying this repeatedly this summer. Thanks!

  2. I love smoothies and keep a supply of frozen bananas in the freezer at all times just for this purpose. I made this recipe with regular, not soy, milk, and no strawberries. I too, put in some fiber additive, and about a teaspoon of whole flax seed for added nutrition. Delicious, and the author is right, frozen leftovers make a great dessert.

  3. My son and I love smoothies, and this one is a winner! The chocolate syrup adds a nice twist. I used fresh strawberries and frozen rasberries with the pineapple and banana. this was my first time trying soy milk. I have to say it was pretty good.

Newest update March 28, 2008; I am so grateful and excited. A wonderful, generous, kind anonymous person gifted me with PM and I can't wait to use all the features. Thank you! I might add a couple notes or links to my page here such as forums I frequent, fave searches, and helpful info. Update March 2008: I was given the opportunity to join my very first recipe swap (I added the banner below, thanks Um Safia) This swap was really fun, interesting, and helpful. Lots of great recipes to choose from and lots of exposure for my own. I thought I'd update this a bit. It's April of 2007 already (wow!) and I might have written the stuff below at least a year ago, and longer. I live in AZ, with a roommate and a nice boyfriend. My roommate has only tried my cooking once, but my bf, bless his heart, tries really hard to tolerate it, lol! He's a good cook in his own right, but me, I'm still a newbie cook at heart. I still enjoy 'zaar and sometimes spend hours and hours on here, as it's still friendly, helpful, and interesting. :) Also, this is late in saying, but I'm supposed to be on an IBS-safe diet consisting of no dairy, egg yolks, caffeine, red meat, too much fat, everything I love, etc.... so I'm working on it, it's taking me years and years, but I've incorporated this kind of diet into my other eating, and if my tummy gets mad at me, well, I only have me to blame. :/ I've been married for almost two years and it's the first time I get to really cook for someone other than myself. (Hehe, I signed up with here not too long after I wrote this, now I'm separated - not because of my cooking lol - but surprisingly found myself again, acting as 'housewife'.) I'm not a great cook, but I do follow after my mother, who tends to estimte her ingredients and taste as she goes, but she and my sister are two of the best cooks I know. The best rule of thumb for seasonings is always add too little, you can always add more, but can't always take away if there's too much. I mostly try other recipes I find, but now and then experiment with whatever I have available if I can't get to the store or am broke, and sometimes come up with pretty good recipes. I also have a hard time cooking usually, it takes me longer than most people as I am legally blind and have no depth perception so sometimes it's hard for me to measure and prepare food. Any of the recipes I post might be estimated unless otherwise stated. Sorry for the inconvenience. :) I found this place doing one of my recipe searches. It looks like a fun place to get recipes. Take care all and happy cooking! :) Helpful Link for Cookbook help: http://www.recipezaar.com/bb/viewtopic.zsp?t=139810
