  1. I made this with American Cameo apples, no sugar and no cinnamon. I actually just wanted to have some unsweetened applesauce on hand to substitute for oil in baking. So, I whipped some of this up and used it in recipe #213594. Because I didn't want any chunks, I pureed in the blender. It made a little over 1 1/2 cups. I think I will use some of it for recipe #94648 next. Thanks for an easy method to make a healthy substitute for baking. This is actually also a prefect way to make applesauce for babies, just puree after cooking, and I would avoid the sugar for babies, but they would love it!

  2. My entire family enjoyed this applesauce! I used a variety of apples and it came out great!

  3. Very easy and yummy recipe. My kids, especially, loved it and we served it warm-straight from the stove. The only thing different I did was to add ground cinnamon, since I was all out of the sticks. Thanks for a nice side dish.

  4. This is wonderful applesauce--so much better (and fresher) than anything that's available in a jar!! I used organic Granny Smith apples, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, and a tiny dash of ground cinnamon (my cinnamon sticks were not very fresh, and didn't give the sauce much cinnamon flavor). The results were perfect! I can hardly believe that applesauce this good is so easy to make! My only change next time will be to double the recipe! Thanks so much for posting this Vino Girl!!

  5. This was very good. Hubby said it reminded him of his babysitter's applesauce (45 years ago), making it just like this. Well, you know I gotta put it in the keeper file because of this alone. I also liked the fact it was so easy and the apples weren't all mushy (like the applesauce you buy in the jars). Thanks again.

  1. Thank you for this fabulous recipe! Yes, I said "fabulous". It's simple and yet you really get a good apple flavor. We love applesauce, but even before I was actively trying to eat better, we started buying the low/no-sugar commercially made versions because we felt the sugar covered up the flavor of the apples. I have a ton of fresh apples so I thought now was the time to try to make my own. This was probably the simple version I found, but I won't look any further. My only change was using fructose in place of the sugar. I bet brown sugar would be wonderful though.

My husband and I married straight out of college in July of 1992. I work as the Assistant Manager at a wine shop which allows me to drink on the job! (OK, not that much, but it's still a fun job...) Besides helping customers choose wine they will like (and also help with food and wine pairings for their menus), I also get to help with the catering end of the business, so I get to spend a fair amount of time in the kitchen making fun appetizers and beautiful food displays. I also work part-time at the fromagerie next door. So yeah - that means I eat on the job, too. :^D We live on several peaceful wooded acres on a cute little river in rural NE Wisconsin, with a cranky old-lady Burmese and whatever stray outdoor cats that have decided to adopt us on any given day. The cute puppy in the picture is Jake, our Elhew-bred English Pointer that we brought home on Easter weekend 2007. I've also got 2 painted turtles named Dennis and Fuzz, and a bunch of fish (koi and goldfish, along with the guppies & swordtails in the turtle tank). I USUALLY eat and cook healthy, but I rarely pass up dessert, either. I do not eat red meat, and try to limit other animal products, too. I love to bake, although I seem to collect a lot of scone and biscotti recipes which I NEVER get around to making. I bake and eat A LOT of cookies and muffins... I almost always reduce the sugar by 1/4 and use whole wheat pastry flour for at least part of the flour. Those two changes do so much to make recipes healthier without compromising taste. I try to reduce fat whenever I can, too, but while I want to eat healthy, I still want to ENJOY what I eat!!! I seem to give a lot of 4 and 5 star reviews here - I seem to have a pretty good sense of what I like by looking at a recipe before I try it. Thank you to anyone that tries my recipes in return, or photographs them.
