This is a recipe that is similar to one I use. I enjoyed the great northern beans in this recipe. The ketchup and brown sugar give the beans a great flavor, but not too sweet. I used hickory smoked bacon, thick cut. The thicker cut of bacon helps keep the bacon from getting lost in the sauce. This dish turned out really, really well. If I were going to experiment, I might add about 1/2 tsp. of liquid smoke just to see if I liked a smokey flavor too. Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe, Karen!

I made the recipe with Farmer John pepper bacon, which was good. If I used regular thick cut in the future, I might add 1/4 t. pepper. I used only 12 oz ketchup, plus 2 oz molasses, a LG yellow onion, and 1/2 lb sugar (half the sugar in the recipe). It was good, but too sweet - I think I will try 1/4 lb sugar in the future, add 1 t. dry mustard, and maybe a spoonful of apple cider vinegar or some citric acid for a bit of tartness with the sweet.
